california's progressive education

My friend Coco invited me to an elves faire. Having just bought an iphone, with no previous experience using T9 word, I mistakenly texted back: "slaves feast?"

(On a slightly crass side note: I typed in "oooooooooooh" and T9 suggested "pooped.")

I've thrown the haggis during the Scottish Highland Festival, twirled the ribbon wands at Renaissance Fairs, and now I can say I've seen John C. Reilly get down with his folk-singing self at The Waldorf School of Altadena's Elves Faire.

Not only were there millions of garden gnomes on the grounds, there were kids. Tons and tons of kids. Not only that: they were happy kids. I found this bizarre. What normal kids love school?

Maybe it's that I had found myself at a progressive learning environment that throws a hippy-dippy celebration decorated like a lord of the rings playground.

I was quite happy. The air was cool and crisp, the vegan ketchup was pink and actually made of beets, and there were tons and tons of baked goods. Including the best cupcake I've ever had: It was a dark-chocolate gluten free concoction that cost me three tickets.

Oh, how could I forget to mention that I'd found about 15 free tickets. Finders keepers you sweet little waldorf twits.

And because I've just realized I managed to exclude most of the children from my photographs, here's one just to prove that in fact they were there and not in my head:

And who doesn't want to watch a 5-year old's attempts at jousting over and over and over and over......
Here's the poor kid's third try:

reflections on brian eno

i grew up with the understanding that eno was a music god, once dressing up as roxy music eno with a cardboard synth tied around my neck and a velvet suit. researching my next film project, i came across his video art, and i have to give credit to this zeus of "video painting"

A link to his 14 Video Paintings (1981 & 1984)

the Ann Arbor film festival is also coming to LA! The 16mm showing will be on Sunday at the Egyptian theatre. An old professor of my mine, Rob Todd, from Emerson has a film in the festival and I suggest taking a look. More information and tickets at lafilmforum

liquid light projections

2 days previous to this day, this glorious Friday in which I will see Harry Potter, my bosses asked me to research and perform some liquid light show projections.

after running around in search of mineral oil, an oil soluble dye (I came up with candle dye cause i had one of those great moments where the lightbulb stays on), and this crazy set of neon food coloring, i went to work with the crew. the 1960s came alive....kinda. my dad texted me telling me to get a xmas tree rotating light to make the glass spin. i had no idea what the hell that even was.

monday reds

First off, let me just announce the flickr account is underway and filling up. More Brewery/POSSIBLE photos:

Seatrain

And because of my love for pinkberry, I'm dedicating an album to my experiences with fro-yo:

Pinkberry Deeecor

Friday: Michelle Macedo played a killer set in Pasadena. Check out her album Flags and Boxes. This girl is seriously talented. I took the photo for her single, Collect My Thoughts,  looky-looky:

Elephant

These were some alternates:

Telephone Red copy
Butterfly Pick

Saturday: Walked around the Americana at Brand. Its goddamn Disney land for adults. stationary stores, woman pushing strollers that contain their mini yap dogs, aggressive kiosk attendants, frank sinatra mysteriously playing from every corner, and a fountain alluding to the ultimate adult playground: Vegas. Went with my friend Daniel whose harsh gab makes me giggle. Example: "That girl needs to take care of that 'stache. I can see it through my friggin sunglasses." We ate pinkberry then......Cheesecake Factory. Other than the fact they serve water out of disgusting plastic beer mugs....not bad. I wonder where the servers all find their white pants. Gentrification: check+

Sunday: Brunch @ Tart near the Grove. Good food, hot waiter.
Football Sunday with the Pats vs. Steelers game. Was served oysters on the half shell, crawfish boil, and crazy good guacamole. Never celebrated Americana in such a fashionable way.
Dunes and Best Coast @ Troubadour. Love that venue except that it highlights the hipster aspects of my interests. ive never seen so much indian spirit holding plaid in one place

now back to work......

if i could be this badass

while stalking filmmaker Harmony Korine across de interweb, I came across his short film for Proenza Shouler.

This is what I'm talking about Los Angeles!! Where do I find you?

Some Screen Shots:

Reminds me of both early 90s Perry Ellis campaigns and Věra Chytilová's Daisies.....

oh yeah, it's POSSIBLE

so, started my new job yesterday. it's baller. i'm baller.

Best part is, the location is an old Pabst Blue Ribbon brewery that was converted into artist lofts and production studios. There are grills are the roof, a bar downstair with some killer beers on tap, and crazy art coming out of the walls--literally.

Crushing on Pinkberry

So, today I got a real job. I'll be assistant project manager at a creative boutique located at The Brewery in downtown Los Angeles. I was so excited when I got the magic email, I laughed, cried, drooled, suffered some heartburn....then headed to Pinkberry.

That's right. The space-age frozen yogurt joints that are always oddly empty and have a design reminiscent of The Jetsons do Japan. I feel very strongly about my small cup of original with pomegranate seeds, strawberry, chocolate crisps, and a dusting of coconut.

In Maine I loved to sit on swivel bar stool at the counter of Waltz Pharmacy and get my malt frappe with maple walnut/coffee icecream and choco syrup. I'd sit and drink the whole thing, slowly at first as it melted, making sure not to let my hands touch the thousands of gum wads stuck under the bar.

Sentiments aside: Here are the numbers

  • Pinkberry: 255 calories w/toppings
  • Extra-Thick Custom Milkshake: 700+ calories
Pinkberry Bliss

one judgement: who the hell says bye-bye to pie!?

End of a California Summer

Its crazy how much happier I get the minute the weather drops below 70 degrees. While I can't wish for snow, I am planning my own type of "rain dance" to will southern californians into experiencing fall. I want colored leaves, windy grey-tinged sunsets and hot toddies.

I'll burn my tongue on hot chocolate daily just to prove it can be done

That last beach day: Santa Monica

And for those who want to learn the letter "N," a real autumnal treat:
